WSIE-FM (88.7) ‘TheJazz Station’ To Conduct On-Air Fund Drive May 18-20

(PRWEB) May 13, 2012

WSIE-FM (88.7)The Jazz Stationbroadcasting at 50,000 watts from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and on wsie.com, will be conducting an on-air fund drive from 5 p.m. Friday, May 18, to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 20, with scheduled breaks in between.

During the weekend, special guests will visit the station studio to chat with on-air personalities Dick Ulett and Jason Valentine, newsperson Tricia Siekmann and WSIE General Manager Greg Conroy.

Scheduled visitors include guitarist Rick Haydon, head of the SIUE Jazz Studies Program; SIUE College of Arts and Sciences Dean Aldemaro Romero, host of Segue on Sunday mornings; SIUE Vice Chancellor for University Relations Patrick Hundley; jazz guitarist Tom Byrne; and Delano Redmond, head of the jazz music program at East St. Louis High School.

At 6 p.m. Saturday, Ryan Sheehan and his Big Band Show airs with music of the great jazz orchestras, past and present, from Glenn Miller to Gordon Goodwin. Justin Wingerter, host of WSIEs Rat Pack Show on Saturday nights, will welcome Dean Christopher, a St. Louis-based comedian who specializes in impressions of the members of that legendary Vegas group of entertainers. The Rat Pack Show, a weekly show and part of the fund-raising weekend, will begin at 7 p.m. that Saturday.

The station will offer new WSIE premium items for giveaway at various levels of funding including a beverage tumbler and a stylish desk clock as well as CD selections from the MaxJazz recording label in St. Louis. In addition, donors may choose to host their very own two-hour jazz show or receive underwriting messages throughout a given day, all for higher levels of giving.

Conroy said proceeds will benefit the stations equipment and operating funds. The first on-air fund-raiser the station had conducted in two decades aired in December, Conroy said, and it was fairly successful, but we need to air these twice annually. Some of the needs of the station include a transmitter generator, additional studio soundproofing, replacement audio system components and music library enhancements.

I realize our listeners dont really want to hear us talk about financial need, especially in this economic climate, Conroy said, but most of our funding comes from our loyal listeners, so this becomes a necessary evil. We think this weekend will be uniquely entertaining, while we play great jazz in between the fund-raising portions of the weekend.

WSIE-FMThe Jazz Station broadcasts 24/7 with news, public affairs, SIUE Cougar Sports and, most of all, great modern American jazz for the St. Louis region. The stations phone-a-thon is part of the Universitys ongoing $ 50 million capital campaign known as the Defining Excellence: The Campaign for SIUE. More than $ 30 million has already been contributed to the campaign

Vice Chancellor Hundley, who also is executive director of the SIUE Foundation, said the campaign allows our supporters and alumni to invest in our momentum. Their generous gifts will keep SIUEs quality educational opportunities affordable for all students, Hundley said. We will be seeking further support from alumni, corporate leaders and the community.

SIUE creates opportunities for students to receive a top-ranked education, he said. More than half of our 90,000 graduates live and work in the St. Louis Metropolitan Area, and SIUE makes a $ 471 million economic impact on our region every year.

Teachers Spend First Month of School Re-Teaching Lost Skills

gI 96416 SummerLearningInfographic FINAL 150dpi Teachers Spend First Month of School Re Teaching Lost Skills
GREENSBORO, NC (PRWEB) May 08, 2012

As students transition from summer back to school, the lapse in learning and the loss of information that occurs over the summer often makes the first weeks of school frustrating and unproductive for both teachers and students. Carson-Dellosa, the leading provider of supplemental education materials, recently published a landmark study revealing that 85% of teachers spend two weeks or more at the beginning of the school year re-teaching critical skills forgotten from the previous year. More than half of these teachers will spend a month reviewing skills. For many children, especially those already struggling, summer learning loss can add up to long-term academic setbacks.

Parents recognize this problem as well. The Carson-Dellosa study also found that 95% of parents believe that if their children continued learning throughout the summer, they would be more successful in the long run. However, they feel uninformed about this gap in learning, with 75% stating that they wish schools would provide more information and resources to parents to help combat summer learning loss.

Other studies researching the summer learning gap report that in the short-term, students can lose up to two and a half months of learning over the summer, the most significant losses occurring in essential math and spelling skills. In addition to this, summer learning loss can add up to staggering effects later in a students academic career. Certain studies show that by sixth grade, those students who experienced summer learning loss at the elementary level could be up to two years behind their peers.

Summer may be an important break for students and teachers, but it is imperative that learning not take a break as well. As dedicated advocates of education both in school and at home, we believe learning can and should be a year-round endeavor, even during summer break, said Judy L. Harris, Carson-Dellosa CEO. We understand that many children often return to school at a disadvantage, having lost the skills they worked so hard to achieve just a few months earlier. Carson-Dellosa is committed to providing the information, materials, and resources teachers and parents need to help close this gap.

Carson-Dellosa has compiled the companys survey findings and other reports on summer learning loss into a quick-read infographic that gives teachers a starting point to discuss the summer learning gap with parents. It also provides a variety of helpful tips on how to prevent the summer slide, such as using local resources like the public library or museum to find free, educational summer events. The infographic is also beneficial for parents who would like to learn more about summer learning themselves and to see how simple it is to prepare their children for the next year. To view or download this valuable infographic resource click here.

In addition to research information and insightful tips, Carson-Dellosa also has an award-winning suite of grade-specific products designed for summer learning including the Summer Bridge Activities and Summer Link series This collection of workbooks, cards, and online activities make it easy for parents to make learning cool during the hottest part of the year. Memorial Hermann Teams With TransforMED to Expand Patient-Centered Primary Care to Houston Area Patients

(PRWEB) May 08, 2012

MHMD, the physician network of Houston-based Memorial Hermann Healthcare System, has begun work with TransforMED to transform six of its Houston-area medical practices into patient-centered medical homes (PCMH). TransforMED is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the American Academy of Family Physicians and a national leader in medical home transformation. The MHMD initiative has the potential to initially touch the lives of nearly 75,000 Houstonians a number that will increase when the initiative is rolled out to nearly 220 primary care practices over the next two years.

A PCMH, known as Advanced Primary Care Practices, the centerpiece of the MHMD network, engages patients as active participants in their own health and wellbeing. Patients are cared for by a physician who leads a medical team to coordinate all aspects of their preventive, acute and chronic health care needs using the best available evidence and appropriate technology. These relationships offer patients comfort, convenience and optimal health throughout their lifetimes.

During phase one of the MHMD initiative, which began in October 2011 and runs through October 2013, TransforMED will provide full facilitation services to accelerate the adoption of the PCMH model of care and help practices earn Level 3 PCMH recognition by the National Committee on Quality Assurance. Practices that meet the stringent NCQA standards are believed to provide better care and better service at a reduced cost to patients and the health care system as a whole. In addition, health information technology is leveraged to give physicians better access to information and measurement tools geared toward managing and improving the health of large populations of patients.

TransforMED will also assist MHMD as it prepares to participate in Memorial Hermanns soon-to-be-established accountable care organization. An ACO is a primary care-based collaboration of health care professionals and health care facilities that accept joint responsibility and accountability for the quality and cost of care provided to a defined patient population. The core of an ACO is effective primary care, built on the foundation of the PCMH model. ACOs also employ new and innovative models of physician payment that are based on a variety of approaches to align incentives for quality, efficiency and cost reduction, as opposed to the traditional fee-for-service model. All MHMD primary care practices will be required to earn Level 3 NCQA recognition before they will be allowed to participate in Memorial Hermanns ACO.

We are pleased to be working with TransforMED to help our Advanced PCPs achieve their Level 3 NCQA Level certification as patient-centered medical homes, said Chris Lloyd, MHMD CEO. By adhering to quality measures and utilizing enhanced resources such as point-of-care tools, these practices will deliver a higher level of care, achieve better clinical outcomes and improve their ability to manage and track the health of their patients. Our goal is to attain optimal patient satisfaction, while ensuring more value for each health care dollar spent.

MHMD has enlisted TransforMEDs team of experts to train several MHMD staff members to become practice coaches. All during 2012, these coaches will receive intensive training from TransforMED in the areas of change management, case management, team-building, leadership development, practice efficiencies, developing and understanding practice metrics, and more. Then, in 2013, they will put their training to use as practice facilitators, helping approximately 100 additional primary care practices across the MHMD network adopt the PCMH model of care.

As the patient-centered medical home continues to emerge as a viable means of improving health care, lowering costs and improving physician and staff satisfaction, it becomes increasingly important for primary care practices and large health systems to work together toward this common goal, said Terry McGeeney, MD, MBA, president and CEO of TransforMED. We applaud MHMD and Memorial Hermann Healthcare System for their foresight and willingness to take important next steps to bring high quality, patient-centered primary care to one of the largest health care systems in the United States.

The Houston-area practices involved in the MHMD patient-centered medical home initiative are:

Military Leadership Academy Now Recruiting High School Students

gI 60950 DSC2754 M Military Leadership Academy Now Recruiting High School Students
Ft. Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania (PRWEB) May 08, 2012

Registration is now open for Freedom Alliances Military Leadership Academy (MLA) series. The academy provides high school students an opportunity to examine military lifestyle and culture while gaining valuable leadership experiences. The next courses will be held June 17- 30 and July 8-21 at Ft. Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania.

While most high school students consider a number of career options following graduation, very few, get the chance to actually experience options before making such an important decision. MLA students complete the program with a better appreciation for the military, and better understand the value of serving a cause greater than themselves.

The MLA program is held throughout the year as part of the Advanced Leadership Course series and is designed to provide continuing education and training to Academy alumni. The MLA programs also extend to other JROTC students who wish to further their leadership and personal development.

We encounter many young students that have an interest in joining the Armed Forces. Our Military Leadership Academy offers those students a chance to better understand the military, through exciting training both in and out of the classroom, according to Freedom Alliance President Tom Kilgannon. Students who participate in our Leadership Academy series experience quality training, teamwork and leadership challenging situations as part of their leadership and personal development training.

Cadets participate in a program based on the curriculum of the U.S. Army. Physical training, tours of military bases, leadership simulations, land navigation, field tactics, urban warfare training, and a visit to Washington, DC are a few of the many activities included at the Academy.

Cadet Anthony Ruby (MLA graduate of 2010): “At MLA’s Be Decisive course I had to face my fears and was placed in unfamiliar military situations, but I overcame them by believing in myself and gaining the courage needed to complete the task at hand from my fellow cadets. Being a leader is about rising to the occasion while taking care of others around you.”

The next leadership training series will be held June 17-30 and July 8-21.For more information and/or to apply please visit http://www.MLACamp.com, email info (at) mlacamp (dot) com or call 1-800-475-6620. Applications must be received by June 1, 2012.
